WOOD RIVER JCT. — Ava Rao hit a two-run homer and Chariho High opened the Division I softball tournament with an 11-0 win over Mount St. Charles on Wednesday.

Rao's hit cleared the fence in right-center field in the sixth inning. Chariho scored seven runs in the frame to end the game by mercy rule. Shelby Roode also drove in two runs in the sixth with a single.

Haylie Wellman and Jackie Altieri each finished 3 for 4 for the Chargers (18-3). Kate Powers was 2 for 2.

Powers pitched all six innings and allowed just three hits while striking out 11.

No. 5 Mount St. Charles ended the season 5-14.

No. 5 Chariho next travels to No. 4 Moses Brown for a quarterfinal game Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
