Outlook: Chariho returns experience on the mound, behind the plate and up the middle as the Chargers hope to advance even further in the state tournament this season.
Powers, a second-team All-Stater last season, went 11-6, averaged just over a strikeout per inning and had a 2.34 ERA.
“She’s gotten stronger and she’s throwing the ball a little harder now,” Petrocelli said. “We are looking for big things from her this year. I may have to monitor her innings this season because we will be relying on her in the playoffs.”
Powers hit .389 with a pair of home runs and 19 RBIs.
Joslin returns at catcher. She hit .411 with two homers and 21 RBIs. O’Leary, a third-team All-State selection last season, is back for her fourth season at second base. She was second on the team with a .456 average and second with 36 hits.
Wellman returns at shortstop and teams with O’Leary to give the Chargers a strong defensive presence up the middle. Wellman hit. 383 last season.
Roode will start at third base, Mastin at first and Kenney in right field. Two of the outfield positions are open.
Coach’s take: “We are looking to make it past the final four, trying to get over that hump. We expect to be there again this year.”
