WOOD RIVER JCT. — Chariho High's Gabi Huzyk had two attributes that paid big dividends for her this tennis season.
"She never gives up on a point and she gets to everything. And she was able to outlast her opponents," Chariho coach Marc Fain said. "She frustrated some very good athletes and got them off their game and made them play her game."
Huzyk, a senior, was named to the All-Division II first team after posting an 8-4 record at No. 1 singles.
"She definitely improved her power game this year," Fain said. "She had a nice crosscourt forehand, and she developed a backhand slice that confused her opponents quite a bit. She always gave a tremendous effort and it paid off."
Fellow senior Bethany Koziol, who played No. 2 singles for the Chargers, was named to the Division II second team after posting a 9-3 record. Koziol had a strong forehand, a good backhand and an effective first serve, Fain said.
Molly Newman and Kiley Cook posted a 6-4 record at No. 3 doubles. They were named second-team All-Division II.
Fain said the two players complemented each very well, and did a good job of communicating. He said they were also "very strong" at the net.
Morgan Wightman was Chariho's sportsmanship recipient.
Chariho finished with an 8-5 record, losing to eventual Division II champion Middletown in the quarterfinals.
