EAST PROVIDENCE — Alyssa DeOliveira scored on a direct kick in the final two minutes to lift East Providence past Chariho High, 1-0, in the season-opening Division II girls soccer game for both teams Wednesday.

Chariho was called for a hand ball just outside the 18-yard box that resulted in the free kick. DeOliveira delivered a "rocket" for the game's only goal, according to Chariho coach Brittney Godbout.

Chariho outshot the Townies, 17-8. The Chargers had six corner kicks; EP finished with two.

"Spencer [Shiels] and Tessa [Azzinaro] both had breakaways that were just wide," Godbout said. "We also had nice shots from the midfield, but we couldn't finish."

Chariho goalie Alison Klein made six saves.

Chariho next hosts Exeter-West Greenwich on Friday at 6 p.m.
