WOOD RIVER JCT. — Spencer Shiels hit two quick 3-pointers in overtime and Chariho High went on to defeat West Warwick, 73-65, in a Division II girls basketball game Friday.
The win was Chariho's third straight and seventh in its last nine games.
Sheils, who finished with 17 points and 11 steals, gave the Chargers an early cushion in the extra period with her two 3s. She scored eight points in overtime, while Kate Powers scored seven of her team-high 21 points.
"Our defense was much better and we made shots right away," Chariho coach Tom Gilligan said of the overtime.
West Warwick (10-11, 7-9 Division II) tied the game with eight seconds left in regulation. Chariho's last-second attempt to win it missed the mark.
Powers added 11 rebounds and three steals for the Chargers (10-9, 10-6). Annaliese Kenney had 15 points and eight boards, and Caitlin O'Leary had 12 points and six rebounds.
Chariho next plays at Westerly on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
