CRANSTON — Kate Powers scored 22 points and had 10 rebounds as the Chariho High girls basketball team earned its first win of the season, 42-32, over Cranston East on Friday night.

Powers, who missed the first three games of the season with an injury, was 4 of 5 from the free-throw line.

"We were able to pound it in to her and they didn't have an answer for her," Chariho coach Tom Gilligan said. "She was very strong underneath the basket."

Chariho (1-5, 1-2 Division II) led 24-13 at the half.

Shelby Roode contributed nine points and five rebounds. Chariho guards Spencer Shiels and Britney LaBelle did not play due to injuries.

Cranston East dropped to 2-4, 1-2.

Chariho next hosts Cumberland on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
