WOOD RIVER JCT. — Portsmouth turned back Chariho High, 72-67 in overtime, in a Division II boys basketball game Thursday night.
Portsmouth's Benjamin Hurd made a contested layup with about a minute to go in OT to put the Patriots ahead, 69-67. Chariho turned the ball over with about 8 seconds left and Pilgrim scored on a layup to seal the victory.
Portsmouth (13-5, 11-2 Division II) is one of the top teams in the league.
"They just made one more play than we did," Chariho coach Corey Downey said. "We were down 10 early in the second half. We responded and played well."
Levi King finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds for Chariho, but picked up his fourth foul with 11 minutes remaining in regulation.
Nathaniel Felicetti contributed 14 points and seven assists, John Pellegrino had 12 points, and Zoot Boschwitz finished with nine rebounds.
Justin Parsons led Portsmouth with 17 points.
Chariho (9-10, 6-8) still needs one more win to qualify for the D-II tournament. Chariho will get its next chance Wednesday at Middletown at 7 p.m.
