NORTH SCITUATE — Chariho High trailed by 12 points in the second half before taking the lead with six minutes to go, but the Chargers ultimately fell to Ponaganset, 76-70, in the season-opening boys basketball game for both teams Friday night.

Dylan LaBelle scored 32 points for Division II Chariho in the nonleague game. He hit four 3-pointers. Steven DelSesto led Division III Ponaganset with 23.

"They have a really good basketball team," Chargers coach Corey Downey said of the Chieftains. "They executed and made the plays when they needed to. They're a solid title contender in Division III."

The Chieftains led 40-31 at halftime.

Ben Harrison finished with 11 points and five rebounds for Chariho. Lucas Santos added seven points and seven assists, and Luke Fusaro had eight points, four rebounds and two steals.

"It's the little things we have to work on," Downey added. "It's a great first nonleague game to play against a good team. ... We just have to be able to learn to keep that lead."

Chariho next hosts Toll Gate on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
