MIDDLETOWN — Chariho High turned in a better second-half performance and beat winless Middletown, 56-46, Wednesday night to earn a berth in the Division II boys basketball tournament.

The game was tied at 22 at the half.

Chariho coach Corey Downey said his team went to the free-throw line just twice in the first half and shot too many 3-pointers.

"We just didn't shoot the ball well in the first half," Downey said. "We [realized] we had to grind out possessions and get extra opportunities with defensive turnovers and offensive rebounds.

"And we were able to get second- and third-chance opportunities and get in our transition offense."

Levi King led the Chargers (10-10, 7-8 Division II) with 25 points and 11 rebounds. Nate Dauray finished with 12 points and six rebounds, and John Pellegrino made a pair of 3-pointers and scored eight points.

Chariho was 9 of 10 from the line.

Middletown dropped to 0-20, 0-16.

Chariho next hosts Narragansett on Friday at 7 p.m.
