To the Westerly School Committee:
Why are the taxpayers of Westerly paying for the maintenance and utilities of the vacant Bradford School? The school was abandoned 18 months ago.
Why isn't the building put on the tax rolls and marketed as a commercial property? Warwick, Providence and many other towns and cities have all listed vacant schools for sale. Those schools have been repurposed as senior housing, office buildings and the like.
The birth rate in the state is declining yearly, and that trend seems to be countrywide. At least 40 percent of property owners in Westerly are summer residents who do not have children in the public school system.
So let's generate real estate taxes for a building with no use in sight.
