In summer I earn “casino cash” working the local beach area. People often ask what the highlights are besides the beach. I refer them to downtown Westerly particularly the library and the park. I tell them that the Columbus statue is Westerly granite and was carved by local artisans. I also encourage them to find the Ninigret stained glass window hidden inside the library. A real gem!
Mr. Lustgarten’s recent letter got me thinking about the lack of Native American representation outdoors in the park. How about a sculpture or at least a stone honoring Princess Red Wing? She was a major presence in the southern Rhode Island/southeeastern Connecticut area for many years in the late 20th century. She also was known nationwide as a scholar in her field.
Perhaps her spot would be in the vicinity of the Runaway Bunny to bridge the traditions of the oral and written history. Grant money could be available from a variety of sources.
Just a thought.
