We are writing to encourage your readers to take advantage of their local Donation Centers. Individuals who are looking to visit a Donation Center with their gently used items have many wonderful choices in the Westerly and Chariho area. There are many fantastic, local nonprofits that accept donations and use their profits to support endeavors in our immediate communities:

The Blue Mitten, at 135 Main Street in Westerly, is “The Shop that Helps Westerly Sing!” It is Westerly’s oldest independent nonprofit Thrift Shop and 100% percent of its proceeds after expenses benefit the programs, concerts, and children’s activities of the Chorus of Westerly. The Chorus strives to harness the power of music to transform lives and to nourish the soul of the community. It performs, presents, and offers incredible musical performances and educational programs to the greater Westerly community, Rhode Island, southeastern Connecticut and beyond. It also preserves, maintains, protects and shares the historic George Kent Performance Hall, one of the finest acoustical spaces for choral and orchestral music in New England.

The Jonnycake Center of Westerly, at 23 Industrial Drive in Westerly, serves the communities of Westerly, Charlestown, Hopkinton and Richmond, and endeavors to provide a continuum of services to assist people through crisis situations and to work with individuals to find a path toward self-sufficiency. To that end, all profits from its thrift store, after expenses, support its social service and food assistance programs. The Jonnycake Center of Westerly provides clients with over 200,000 equivalent meals a year through its food pantry, provides clients with over $114,000 of financial assistance a year for housing, heating, utilities and education through its Social Service Department, provides clients with over 4,000 units of clothing and 1,600 household items through its social service voucher system, and supports over 430 families with holiday food and gift support through its holiday programs. Additionally, the Jonnycake Center of Westerly provides weekend, school vacation and summer vacation food support to local children through its PowerPack and SPLASH programs. It also works in conjunction with the Domestic Violence Resource Center of South County to provide domestic violence advocacy on-site for private and group consultations and support. Finally, alongside the Ocean Community Chamber of Commerce and Education Exchange, the Jonnycake Center of Westerly is a partner in the Westerly Regional Real Jobs Program, and runs four six-week job-skills classes each year.

Habitat for Humanity ReStore, at 155 Shannock Road in Charlestown, is a nonprofit home improvement store and donation center. Founded by Habitat for Humanity, it is dedicated to eliminating substandard housing locally and worldwide and was founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, durable place to live in dignity and safety. Proceeds from ReStore sales are used to support Habitat for Humanity’s Homeownership Program for low-income families in Washington County and to build homes in South County.

RICAN (Rhode Island Center Assisting those in Need), at 805 Alton Carolina Road in Charlestown, is a 95% volunteer nonprofit organization which provides emergency food, clothing and other vital supports to neighbors in crisis throughout the state, primarily in Washington County and surrounding areas. RICAN rescues over 25,000 pounds of food per month from its Feeding America partners that would otherwise be wasted and distributes through its client-choice weekly food pantry. Their rescue results in over 300,000 pounds of food, equaling 250,000 meals distributed per year. Milk and eggs are provided bi-weekly along with their healthy snack program for families with children. In addition, RICAN distributes clothing, diapers, and personal care items, and provides holiday meals as well as gifts to over 600 children through its holiday programs. Proceeds from their Thrift Store sales are used to support its food pantry and operating costs.

Whether your heart lies in the arts, crisis management and social services, affordable housing, or resource recovery, there is a local donation center supporting local individuals in our area, that would greatly welcome your support!
