I want to thank Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) for his leadership in animal protection at the federal level. As a co-lead of the Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act, S. 2006, Sen. Whitehouse is protecting American horses from slaughter in the U.S. and from the fate of being brutally transported to other countries for slaughter.

This bill criminalizes the act of sending horses to slaughter for human consumption and gives law enforcement officials the tools to apprehend those who engage in such acts. During the shipping process, horses suffer through 24 hours without food, water, or rest. Once they arrive at their destination, their slaughter is typically fraught with fear and pain. In addition, because American horses are not raised for human consumption, they are often given drugs that are toxic to humans.

I truly appreciate Sen. Whitehouse’s support for the SAFE Act and his record of support for so many commonsense animal protection measures.
