I would like to commend the Westerly Town Council for considering the larger world and the possible ban of single use plastic in its deliberations.

While the council has many pressing issues to address, protecting the environment from this type of waste is a growing concern. Those who would use sarcasm to belittle this effort are not informed about the extensive damage caused by such items as plastic bags and straws that do not biodegrade and end up in our waterways.

We must do more, not less, to reduce this particularly destructive waste stream.
