I have lived on Shore Road in Westerly since 2006. I have seen one coyote in my yard, in 2007.

This past October, a coywolf dragged off my friend’s toy poodle, who was in my driveway. If I’d had Skippy on leash beside me as I gardened, he would not have been taken.

I abhor the idea of hiring hunters to kill the coyotes living in our midst. As DEM experts testify, this mass kill will not permanently take care of the coyote “problem.”

If residents would NOT discard garbage on their property and would securely cover the rubbish bins in their yard and keep their pets in the house or on leash, maybe the coyotes would figure out (they are smart animals) this is not an area for free food, and move on.
