Due to the popularity of Soup & Chowder Night last year, George Routhier will be cooking and preparing Soup & Chowder Night again this year. On March 29 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., he will be serving clam fritters with Rhode Island, New England, and Manhattan chowder. Advance-sale tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. Tickets will be sold at the door, but are $15 for adults and $7 for children 12 and under. You may purchase tickets at the Center office or from George Routhier.
RIPTA will be holding a Photo I.D. Clinic on Friday, March 29, for those who would like to purchase No Fare or reduced fare passes to use for RIPTA or Flex buses. Low-income seniors 65 and older and handicapped individuals under the age of 65 may purchase two-year passes for $10 so that they may ride the bus at no additional cost. All other seniors 65 and older and handicapped individuals under 65 may purchase two-year reduced fare passes that will allow them to use the bus for 1/2 fare during non-peak hours. Forms are available in the Center office that show what you need to bring for the clinic and what you need to fill out.
The AARP Tax Assistants continue to offer help with filing income taxes on Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to area residents starting Wednesday, Feb. 6. Appointments are on a “first-come first-served” basis. No one may sign the attendance sheet before 8:30 a.m. Please be sure to gather all information you will be using for filing so that your appointment will run smoothly. You will need your 2017 tax return (if you filed one), a photo I.D., your Social Security card (absolutely necessary), your bank or checking account number with routing number if depositing your refund directly, any W-2 forms, 1099 forms, SSA-1099 for Social Security benefits, form 1098 for mortgage interest, medical and dental expense receipts, records of other tax deductions, state income tax, real estate and personal property tax paid, and any other materials that affect your income or expenses. URI Pharmacy Outreach will be holding an informational presentation on memory on Tuesday, March 19, at 11 a.m. You are invited to attend this free presentation.
Applications for the May 9 Board of Directors election will be available on Friday, March 1, and are due back in the director’s office by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, April 5. Three three-year seats on the board will be available this year as the seats of Peggy Fraser, Carl Jerard, and Ann King will be available. Peggy and Carl will not be able to run this year as they are finishing two consecutive three-year terms. Any full-fledged member of the Center (not honorary or associate) who has paid his or her dues by Jan. 15 and has been a member of the Center for a full year is eligible to run. Center members who have belonged to the Center for at least six months are eligible to vote in the election.
