WESTERLY — Residents interested in filling a vacancy on the School Committee are asked to submit a resume and letter of interest to the town clerk's office by Friday at 4 p.m.
The Town Council set the deadline during its meeting Monday and also scheduled a special meeting for Nov. 14 at 5:30 p.m. in Council Chambers at Town Hall, where interviews of the candidates will occur. The council plans to make an appointment immediately following the interviews. All material submitted in support of applications will be considered public documents and will be posted on the municipal website, members of the Town Council said.
Applicants must be qualified to vote in town. The term expires after the 2020 general election.
The vacancy was created by the death on Oct. 15 of Christine A. Piezzo, who was serving as the School Committee's vice chairwoman. Piezzo, an unaffiliated candidate, was elected in 2016. A provision in the town charter gives the Town Council authority to fill vacancies on the School Committee.
There are currently two Democrats, two Republicans, and two unaffiliated voters on the School Committee. This is the second time this year that the Town Council has had to fill a vacancy. Tim Killam, an unaffiliated voter, was appointed in March following the death of Patricia Panciera, a Democrat, in January.
Materials can be brought to the town clerk's office or emailed to clerk Donna Giordano at firstname.lastname@example.org. For more information, call the office at 401-348-2502.
