WESTERLY — Local schools are dismissing early and Wheeler Library will close at 1 p.m. ahead of a winter storm that is expected to bring a mix of snow, sleet and rain to the region Tuesday afternoon.
Westerly, Chariho and North Stonington schools each announced early dismissal ahead of the storm, while Stonington Public Schools cancelled classes for the day as a precaution due to the timing of the storm.
According to the National Weather Service, snow was expected before 1 p.m., followed by a mix of snow and sleet between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., with sleet expected after 3 p.m. A total daytime snow and sleet accumulation of 1 to 3 inches is possible.
Although the shoreline was only expected to get a couple inches, inland areas were projected to receive more. As a result, UConn had announced it would close the Storrs campus at noon and the Rhode Island General Assembly cancelled Tuesday's session.
"Please remember that once there is plowable snow, a parking ban is in effect," Westerly police said in a Facebook post. "Make arrangements for off street parking so as to allow our plows to clear roads." A parking ban automatically goes into effect in Stonington once there is 2 inches of snow.
