WESTERLY — Rui Almeida, who served as town planner for just under one year, was dismissed from his position earlier this week.

Town Manager J. Mark Rooney confirmed Friday that Almeida, who had been on paid administrative leave for about one week, was terminated on Wednesday afternoon and would not receive a severance package. Rooney declined further comment on the reason for Almeida's dismissal.

Almeida did not return a telephone message seeking comment.

Benjamin R. Delaney, who was hired as associate town planner in early 2017 and then promoted to principal planner in January, will serve as interim town planner. A search for a new permanent town planner commenced Friday when the vacancy was posted.

Rooney said the town might contract with a consultant to assist with the process of completing a revision of the municipal Comprehensive Plan. The Town Council has set a July 1 deadline for a completed draft of the plan, which has been under revision for several years.

Almeida filled a vacancy created after former Town Planner Jason Parker left the position he held from October 2016 to March 2018. Parker, who is now a member of the Planning Board, was placed on administrative leave and never returned to his position.
