The 72nd annual Westerly-Pawcatuck Columbus Day Parade is set to step off from Westerly High School around 1 p.m. Sunday. Police want residents to be aware of road closures, parking restrictions and detours in an effort to assure everyone can enjoy their holiday weekend.
Westerly Police Capt. Steven Johnson said as a result of the parade, there will be no parking from 11 p.m. Saturday to 6 p.m. Sunday on Ward Avenue, Bellevue Avenue, Granite Street and Grove Avenue. There will also be parking restrictions during that time on High Street from Grove Avenue to Canal Street, Canal Street from High Street to the Stillman Avenue Bridge, and along Broad Street from Elm Street to the Pawcatuck River Bridge.
Johnson said vehicles have to be removed from listed streets no later than 8 a.m. on Sunday or they will be towed.
On the Stonington side of the river, Police Capt. Todd Olson said residents and visitors should be aware of parking restrictions along the parade route including Stillman Avenue, Liberty Street and West Broad Street from around 10 a.m. until the parade has concluded.
Motorists traveling through this area should also expect delays, the police said.
