WESTERLY — Furloughed employees facing financial hardship because of the government shutdown will have their membership fee waived at the Ocean Community YMCA and its locations in Westerly, Mystic, and Wyoming.

The Y announced Tuesday that the waiver will be in effect until the furloughed worker’s compensation is restored. The notice comes as the government shutdown is in its 32nd day.

Joshua E. Posey, membership development and marketing director, said that the YMCA will also offer furloughed employees free trials during the shutdown if they are not currently members. All memberships provide members with access to a fitness center, and a variety of programs intended to help people stay active and healthy.

Furloughed workers should bring their government ID and any furlough documentation to the welcome center of the YMCA they will be attending: either the Westerly-Pawcatuck Branch, the Naik Family Branch, and or the Arcadia Branch.
