WESTERLY — Police said a car crashed into the dining room of the Burger King restaurant on Franklin Street Saturday night after the driver hit a curb and then accidentally pressed the gas pedal instead of the brake.

Westerly police said Tuesday that the motorist, a 66-year-old woman from Whitinsville, Mass., was not injured and that the damage was limited to the window and wall of the building at 99 Franklin St.

"Fortunately, the only customer present in the restaurant was on the other side of the room and he was not impacted it," said Westerly Police Chief Shawn Lacey. "All things considered, this is the best possible income we could have hoped for."

According to police, the woman was trying to pull into a parking slot in front of the restaurant when she jumped the curb and drove into the dining room. She was slightly shaken up but declined medical attention, officials said.

A Westerly building official was contacted and determined that there was no structural damage. The restaurant was closed Saturday evening, but temporary repairs were made and Burger King was able to open for business again Sunday morning, police said.
