WESTERLY — Voters who will not be able to vote at their polling place on the date of the Oct. 10 referendum can cast their ballot at Town Hall starting Friday.
The in-person early voting, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday, at Town Hall will run through Oct. 9. On Oct. 10 voters can also cast their ballots at Town Hall from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Voters will be asked to approve or reject authorizing the issuance of bonds not to exceed $71,410,000 for the proposed school building project. Voters will also be asked to vote in favor or against an update to the Town Charter that would remove term limits for the Town Council; to consider an amendment to the Town Charter that would change the timeline for submission of the General Government budget from the third Monday in February to the third Monday in March to allow municipal departments more time to develop more accurate budgets; and to consider an amendment to the Town Charter to change the timeline for submitting the annual proposed School Committee budget from the first Monday in February to the first Monday in March.
The early voting is an extension of the state’s emergency mail ballot process. Voters who choose to vote at Town Hall will use an emergency ballot provided at Town Hall.
State law permits the use of mail ballots for those who are ill or have a disability that creates a hardship getting to assigned polling places; those who are in a hospital or similar institution; military members and their spouses who will be out of state or voters who will be out of the country; and voters who may not be able to vote at their assigned polling place on the day of the election.
The town’s early voting is based on the fourth reason — those who may not be able to get to their polling place.
There will be two polling places open on Oct. 10. Precinct 3601, which normally votes at Bradford Citizens Club; 3603, which normally votes at State Street School; 3604, which normally votes at Venice Restaurant; and 3605, which normally votes at Westerly Middle School, will all vote at Venice Restaurant, 165 Shore Road.
Voters in Precinct 3602, who normally vote at Westerly High School; 3606, who normally vote at Springbrook Elementary School; and 3607 who normally vote at Faith Bible Chapel, will all vote at Faith Bible Chapel, 115 Ashaway Road.
