Join members of the Westerly-Pawcatuck International City of Peace group Thursday at 6 p.m. for a showing, "The Ghost Army," as part of a month-long celebration of peace in Westerly. The Ghost Army was notable for using inflatable tanks, sound effects, and imagination to fool the Germans on the battlefields of Europe. The unsung heroes of the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops and the 3133rd Signal Company Special saved thousands of lives and helped win the war, but their efforts were kept secret for fifty years and have yet to be officially recognized. The movie is free. Be a part of history Friday night at the Windjammer for "There's Nothing Trivial About Westerly," the Westerly 350 trivia night to benefit the Westerly Library and Wilcox Park. Head to the Westerly Airport Saturday for “Wings Over Westerly, Celebrating the 350th Anniversary of Westerly and Aviation," a free festival of flying featuring airplane and helicopter rides, police canine demonstration, a creation station, beading, crayons and coloring sheets, pony rides, antique car display and tours of a Lifestar helicopter 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lunch and snacks available. Rain date is Sunday. Stop by the booth of the League of Women Voters South County Saturday during the Wings Over Westerly to register to vote or update your voter registration.


Look up Saturday at sundown to see "Up," the classic film about 78-year old Carl Fredricksen, who travels to Paradise Falls in his home equipped with balloons, inadvertently taking along a young stowaway. The United Theatre in partnership with the Westerly Library and Wilcox Park will host the movie as part of the Movies in the Park 2019. Rise early Saturday and head to Napatree Point Conservation Area for an 8:30 a.m. shorebirds and fall migrants bird walk sponsored by the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center and Watch Hill Conservancy. Free, suitable for adults only. Visit


Head to Grey Sail Tap Room on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. and enjoy the Rhode Island Brewers Guild fifth annual Ocean State Beer Festival with breweries from around the state. Enjoy beer selections, food, games and live music. Tickets are $40 and include unlimited samples of beers as well as a souvenir tasting glass. Ticket sales benefit the Rhode Island Brewers Guild. Enjoy "Beer & Books" Thursday when Savoy Bookshop & Café and Cottrell Brewing Co. host local author Dirk Langeveld at the brewery to discuss his book, “The Artful Dodger: The 20-Year Pursuit of World War I Draft Dodger Grover Cleveland Bergdoll.” The event includes free beer samples and an author talk.
