STONINGTON — Stonington police are taking part today in the national Connect to Disconnect enforcement, an effort between 2 and 6 p.m. aimed at distracted driving. The enforcement effort was part of the National Highway Traffic Administration's "U Drive, U Text, U Pay" campaign.

"The goals are to demonstrate a nationwide commitment to enforcing cellphone and texting bans, and to reduce traffic crashes caused by distracted drivers, ultimately preventing injuries and deaths associated with cell phone use and texting while driving," Stonington Police Sgt. Keith Beebe said in a press release.

The biannual program, which involves extra patrols, is held every April ahead of the spring and summer travel season and again in August to encourage safe practices as children head back to school.
