The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has announced that Sandy Point Island beach passes are available for purchase. The passes can be purchased online at or in person at the Stonington Community Center, 28 Cutler St., in Stonington.

A Sandy Point Island beach pass is required for anyone 18 and older visiting the island beginning Memorial Day through Labor Day. The fees for the beach passes are similar to last year's: Individual season pass $25;  senior citizen season pass $15; and daily pass $10. The senior discount is for visitors 62 and older. For a family wishing to purchase beach passes, passes are not required for children under 18.

Visitors can call the Rhode Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex at 401-364-9124 with any questions regarding the management of Sandy Point Island or purchasing of beach passes.

The Wildlife Service has a lease for Sandy Point Island and is working in collaboration with the landowners, Avalonia Land Conservancy Inc. The fees will go back into management of the island, in addition to paying for administration of the fee program. The service said its goal is to manage the island for migrating shorebirds while maintaining its availability to the public for passive recreation and observation of the wildlife the service aims to protect.
