STONINGTON — A Hartford man is facing charges after the police said the rental truck he was driving caught and pulled electrical wires off several Pequot Trail houses early Monday.

The man, Tynell Barnes, 31, was charged with evading responsibility in a crash causing damage to property, and failure to carry a license.

Stonington police received a call around 5:20 a.m. Monday reporting that a rental truck had driven on  Pequot Trail-Route 234 near the intersection with West Broad Street when the truck struck electrical wires and pulled them from houses, cutting off power to several homes on the north side of Route 234. At least two residences lost power, officials indicated.

Police said they were still investigating when Barnes headed back on the same route. An officer pulled him over after realizing that the truck met the description provided by a witness. Barnes was not carrying a driver's license, leading to the additional charge, the police said.

Repairs were quickly made to the homes. The road remained closed through much of the day because of  other scheduled construction, not as a result of the incident, the police said.

Barnes was issued a summons and released on a promise to appear for arraignment in New London Superior Court.
