SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts man whose 8-month-old daughter died days after he brought her to the hospital with severe injuries is now facing a murder charge.

Daniel Torres, of Westfield, was held on $1 million bail after pleading not guilty Thursday to second-degree murder at his Hampden Superior Court arraignment. He had been held on $1 million bail since his arrest in July on charges including assault and battery on a child.

Torres brought his daughter to Baystate Noble Hospital on July 29 with swelling and bleeding of the brain, retinal hemorrhages, and bruises on her face. She died two days later.

Torres told police that the injuries were accidental, sustained while he was playing with the girl.

His attorney says he will argue for lower bail at a future court date.
