RICHMOND — A Charlestown man is facing charges of driving under the influence after police said a traffic stop for speeding led officers to discover he was had a blood alcohol content more than three times the legal limit.

The man, Shawn P. Thomas, 39, of 14 Acorn Valley Way, was stopped Monday around 8 p.m. after an officer on South County Trail clocked him at 70 mph in a 45 mph zone.

Police said Thomas showed signs of intoxication and was given a field sobriety test. At the police station, he agreed to a breathalyzer test, which returned readings of .243 and .245 in separate phases. The legal limit in Rhode Island is .08.

Thomas was charged with driving under the influence with a blood alcohol content greater than .15 and was also cited for speeding. He was released on a promise to appear in Fourth Division District Court.
