WESTERLY — A motorcycle passenger has died and the driver suffered serious injuries when the motorcycle they were riding on crashed along East Avenue just before midnight Sunday.
Westerly police and firefighters and personnel with the Westerly Ambulance Corps were called to the area of East Avenue near Sosoa Lane for reports of a motorcycle crash. The police said both the driver, who has not yet been identified, and passenger Doreen Billman, of Westerly, were each thrown from the motorcycle and found off the road a short distance away.
"A preliminary investigation indicates that the motorcycle was traveling north on East Avenue, failed to negotiate the corner at Sosoa Lane, and left the roadway," Police Capt. Steven Johnson said in a press release.
Billman, 58, suffered life threatening injuries and was taken to Westerly Hospital where she was pronounced dead. The driver was taken to Rhode Island Hospital and is currently listed in stable condition, the police said.
The crash remains under investigation through the police department's Accident Reconstruction Team.
