WESTERLY — An 18-year-old Westerly woman suffered serious injuries Friday night when she was struck by a car in the area of the Aquastar Inn on Post Road.

Westerly police, Dunn’s Corners firefighters and personnel with the Westerly Ambulance Corps were called to 110 Post Road, Route 1, just east of the Chamber of Commerce office, for reports of a crash involving a pedestrian at about 7 p.m.

The Westerly police said the woman, identified as Vanessa Spears, suffered serious injuries and was treated at the scene by the ambulance and fire department crews. She was taken directly to Rhode Island Hospital, and the police said she was listed in critical condition.

Westerly Police Chief Shawn Lacey said the department is investigating the circumstances of the crash, but said Saturday morning that “it does not appear that speed or alcohol were a factor in the accident.”

The driver was identified as Michael Malvinni, 57, of Westerly; the police said no charges have been filed. Anyone who witnessed the crash is encouraged to contact the Westerly Police Department at 401-596-2022.
