HOPKINTON — A Pawcatuck woman was arrested on DUI charges Monday afternoon after the Jeep Wrangler she was driving veered off the roadway on Fairview Avenue and struck a tree.
The woman, Ashley D. Johnson, 36, of 55 Liberty St., Apt. 1, was charged with driving under the influence with an unknown blood alcohol content, refusal to submit to a chemical test, driving a car without the owner's consent and driving with an expired license. She was also charged on a bench warrant from 4th Division District Court for failing to appear in another case, the police said.
According to a Hopkinton police report, after hitting the tree, the vehicle came to a stop in the middle of the roadway. Hopkinton Police Capt. Mark Carrier said that Johnson, who was crying, told officers that she had "messed up" by taking her stepfather's car without permission and drinking.
The police said an EMT was asked to evaluate her, and after declining medical attention, she was given a field sobriety test, which she failed.
"The one thing we can say was fortunate, it happened before the buses had gone through the area to drop off children," Carrier said. "There are a lot of kids on that route and had it been later in the day, this could have been much worse."
