WESTERLY — A local woman is facing DUI charges after the police said her vehicle went down an embankment on the north side of Hiscox Road near the Forrestal Drive intersection.

The woman, Mary T. Salimeno, 72, was charged with driving under the influence with an unknown blood alcohol content and refusal to submit to a chemical test. She was also cited for laned roadway violations, the police said.

Police, firefighters and medical personnel were called to the scene around 9:05 p.m. Monday for reports of a one-car crash. Officers arrived to find Salimeno still sitting in the driver's seat, uninjured.

An investigation determined that she had gotten lost while driving to a friend's house and was northbound on Forrestal when she failed to make a turn and drove into a wooded area, sliding down the embankment. She failed a field sobriety test and refused a breathalyzer test at the Westerly Police Station.

Salimeno was released on bond and is due for arraignment in Fourth Division District Court on Nov. 1, according to Rhode Island judicial records.
