STONINGTON — Police are asking for help from the public in identifying a man they said attempted to use counterfeit currency to purchase an assortment of gift cards from a local business.

Stonington police released an image of the suspect on Facebook Monday, a surveillance photo that officials said was captured at the Pawcatuck Stop & Shop on Liberty Street. According to the police, the unknown man entered the store and attempted to use five fake $100 bills in order to purchase the cards.

An employee was suspicious of the man's effort and contacted Stonington police, officials said. The man then left the store without the fake currency  or gift cards, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer Ryan Armstrong at 860-599-7532 or the department's non-emergency line at 860-599-4411.
