WESTERLY — A North Stonington man is facing charges after police who responded to a shoplifting complaint said they found that he was in possession of crystal methamphetamine.
The man, Cody Bill, 40, of 39 E. Clarks Falls Road, was arraigned Tuesday on one count each of possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor shoplifting. He was released on a promise to appear for a felony screening on May 22, according to Rhode Island court records.
The police went to the Westerly Walmart around 3 a.m. Tuesday after receiving a call from loss prevention specialists (the store is open overnight). The officers said they learned that Bill had entered the store, took a gun holster from a shelf and then "walked around for three hours before checking out." The holster was valued at $19.
Upon his arrest, the officers conducted a search and found that Bill was carrying a bag containing 0.9 grams of crystal meth. He told the police it was cocaine, but Police Chief Shawn Lacey said field testing determined it was crystal meth. The officers also said he had knives in his pockets, and those were of legal length.
