0103 NST car fire

NORTH STONINGTON — Firefighters extinguished a car fire along Interstate 95 North Tuesday morning after flames extended into the cab of a Mazda, causing heavy damage to the car.

Officials were called to I-95 in the area just south of Exit 93 for reports of a car fire around 9 a.m. When North Stonington Volunteer Fire Company personnel arrived, occupants were already out of the car which was fully engulfed.

Firefighters were able to quickly contain and extinguish the flames and no injuries were reported. The car was removed later in the morning.

The fire and response occurred within the breakdown lane , officials indicated, and responders were able to combat the blaze with minimal impact to traffic. According to the Connecticut Department of Transportation, all lanes were open again as of 9:45 a.m.
