HOPKINTON — Four people were injured Tuesday afternoon after the police said a car drifted across the Main Street center line and collided head-on with a box truck.

The driver of the car, a woman in her 30s, was taken by ambulance to Rhode Island Hospital with serious leg injuries after she was pinned in the car. The police said the truck driver and two passengers suffered minor injuries and were taken by ambulance to an area hospital, where they were treated and released.

Police, Ashaway firefighters and personnel with the Ashaway ambulance service were called to the scene, in the area of Route 3 and Wellstown Road, at around 3 p.m. Hope Valley firefighters and staff with the Hope Valley Ambulance and the Westerly Ambulance Corps also responded.

Ashaway firefighters led an effort to extricate the woman, a task that took about 45 minutes, officials said.

Officials said witnesses, including the occupants of the truck, reported that the car had veered over the center line. They said the truck driver tried to get out of the way but couldn't avoid the collision. Hopkinton police were continuing to investigate.
