WESTERLY — A Groton man is facing charges after an officer discovered 103 Xanax pills during a traffic stop on Oak Street. The man, Jacob Bailey Mitchell, 19, was arrested Saturday on two counts of possession of a controlled substance. He was also cited for possession of less than an ounce of marijuana.
Westerly police said Mitchell was stopped near the intersection of Oak and Haswell streets for an alleged traffic violation. Police Capt. Steven Johnson said the officer smelled marijuana, told Mitchell to get out of the car and patted him down. The officer found the pills in a plastic bag tucked into his waistband, according to police. Johnson said he did not have a prescription for the pills.
A small amount of butane hash oil and marijuana were found in a search of the car, the police said. In an email to The Sun, Mitchell said he has a medical marijuana card but was not carrying it at the time.
