WESTERLY — Firefighters doused a small fire Tuesday morning in an excavator on a barge that was stationed in the Pawcatuck River near the Westerly Yacht Club. Firefighters with the Westerly Fire Department and mutual aid from Pawcatuck, with boats from both departments, were dispatched to the scene just before 11:45 a.m.

Officials said the fire was contained quickly and firefighters doused the remaining flames using fire extinguishers. The cause of the fire was not immediately determined, but was not considered to be suspicious. Officials said damage to the machine and barge were minimal. The equipment was being used for maintenance dredging.
