NORTH STONINGTON — The North Stonington Board of Selectmen, at a special meeting on Friday, voted to move the modified town budget forward to a town meeting and referendum to be held Monday, June 17, in the old middle school cafeteria, 298 Norwich Westerly Road, Route 2.
First Selectman Mike Urgo said that a copy of the meeting notice will be available on the town website Monday, along with copies of the budgets.
Urgo predecessor as first selectman, Shawn Murphy, is circulating a petition asking that the wording of the upcoming budget referendum be changed. He said he did not have enough signatures Friday to present it to the selectmen, but that he is keeping the petition going.
In the petition, Murphy is asking that the wording be changed to allow for split votes for municipal, capital, and school spending. The referendum approved by selectmen on Friday is a single question on the overall budget. Voter rejected the first budget proposal.
Murphy said he had about half of the needed 200 signatures, which will need to be verified by the town clerk and expected to get more signatures over the weekend.
