STONINGTON — New England Science & Sailing Foundation received the Outstanding Mentor Champion Award this month from the Eastern Connecticut Mentoring Collaborative for its work with the public schools of New London. The collaborative is a program of the New London-based Community Foundation, and the award was presented at an awards event in New London on Jan. 17.

The award recognizes NESS' SEA AmeriCorps Program and staff, which works through the school district to provide programming, academic and social support to students. This year, the NESS foundation’s team of 14 full-time AmeriCorps members has offered mentoring services that have reached more than 1,000 New London students at all grade levels. AmeriCorps, an initiative of the Corporation for National and Community Service, is a network of national service programs supported by the federal government, foundations, and other donors.

NESS, based in Stonington, provides students of all ages with year-round programming using marine science, sailing, powerboating, and adventure sports as teaching platforms; nessf.org.
