The headline “Supporters of Ecuadorian immigrant block fed building” in Saturday’s Westerly Sun highlights yet another mess from our immigration laws. People often say that America was built by immigrants. That is true, but that was a different world — before socialism and the welfare state.
Years ago, a young man could come to this country, get a difficult or dangerous job, save his money and go back to Europe and buy a farm. Land was available, but people had to make farms or otherwise use it to get title to it.
Contrast that with today’s immigrants, who get their children taught in their native language and benefit from other “welfare state” benefits. “Socialism”, which takes money at gunpoint from successful people and gives it to people who fail, is destroying this “land of the free and home of the brave.”
