PROVIDENCE — The Rhode Island Department of Health, which recommended Wednesday that swimming areas at Camp Watchaug and the Burlingame Picnic Area be closed because of high bacteria levels, reversed its recommendation on Thursday, saying that the bacteria counts had returned to acceptable levels. Both areas are on Watchaug Pond in Charlestown.

The DOH said it would continue to monitor and review beach water quality regularly to ensure safe bathing throughout the summer season. The status of a beach can change on a daily basis, the department said. Current  information is available through a recorded message on the department's beaches telephone line, 401-222-2751.
