PROVIDENCE — The Rhode Island Department of Health announced Friday that Butterball LLC has recalled 78,164 pounds of raw ground turkey products that may be contaminated with the Salmonella Schwarzengrund bacteria.

The meat was produced on July 7, 2018, and the recall affects 48- and 16-ounce plastic wrapped trays of 85 and 93 percent lean ground turkey with freeze or sell by dates of July 26. Six people have been sickened by the bacteria in three states — Minnesota, North Carolina, and Wisconsin — with one hospitalization, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The products, shipped nationwide, bear the number “EST. P-7345” inside the USDA mark of inspection. The products could be in freezers. Consumers are advised to throw away or return them to the place of purchase. Consumers with questions can call 800-288-8372.
