Westerly Senior Center: Current and upcoming center activities and meetings

WESTERLY — The senior center is “back in the swing” with a full set of activities after the Labor Day holiday.

On Thursday, Sept. 13, at 11 a.m., Dr. Brad Green will offer a special presentation at the senior center on orthopedics. On the following Thursday, Sept. 20, at 11 a.m., Dr. Shawn Colson will offer a special presentation on foot and wound care. Seniors are encouraged to attend these meetings, which have been arranged through Westerly Hospital. There is easy access to the senior center and the room where the presentations are held.

Westerly Hospital will hold a new set of arthritis exercise classes starting this Monday at 10:45 a.m. Classes are held Mondays and Thursdays for six weeks and cost $30. Join by calling the physical therapy and rehabilitation department at 401-348-3346, or by coming to the first class on Monday.

The Book Discussion group will meet this Monday at 1:30 p.m. in the shuffleboard room. The group will discuss “The People of the Book,” by Geraldine Brooks. New members are always welcome.

Surfside 8 will resume square dance lessons this Monday at 7 p.m. New students of any age are invited to attend the first class for free to see if they would like to join in the fun of square dancing.

A representative from the local VFW and DAV will be available at the senior center on Tuesday at 11 a.m. to help with VA disability claims and health benefits.

The Red Hat Chicks will meet on Tuesday at noon at the Cooked Goose on Watch Hill Road. Call Nancy Milligan if you plan to attend.

On Tuesday, the floor shuffleboard group will meet at 1:15 p.m. to organize the new season. Teams will be drawn and rules will be reviewed. If you plan to play this season, add your name to the list posted outside the center office.

The summer shuffleboard league will hold its banquet at noon on Tuesday.  Winners of the season and the hanger champion will be announced.

A representative from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will be available on Friday from 10 a.m. to noon and will take food stamp applications. Many programs at the senior center, including social services, do not require that participants be members.
