Westerly native and Community College of Rhode Island student Dante Turano, third from left, was among a field of 30 student-athletes in Rhode Island selected as 2019 Scholar-Athlete award-winners. Scholar-Athletes are chosen based on a combination of their grade point average, athletic performance and ability to show exemplary character while possessing the leadership qualities necessary to succeed both on and off the playing field. Turano’s toughness on defense for the CCRI’s men’s soccer team led the Knights in some of their more noteworthy performances over the past two seasons. In 2019, Turano, who plans to graduate this year, started in all 11 games and played a key role in four shutout victories for CCRI during his two-year career against some of the best competition in the region.
With Turano are, from left, Commissioner for Postsecondary Education Brenda Dann-Messier, CCRI President Meghan Hughes, and House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello. The scholar-athletes were honored recently at a State House reception hosted by House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello.
