For 10 days in December, sixth-grade students in Michelle Diaz' civics class at Westerly Middle School collected more than 100 pounds of school supplies to send to families devastated by the California wildfires. For a bonus point, students were encouraged to submit their own press releases to newspapers. One student involved with the project noted that their efforts were, "making a difference across the country to help schoolmates in need," and "shows how anyone can change a life. Even if separated by long distances, helping during hard times can put a smile on anyone's face.” Students are pictured packing the supplies to send to California.
