PAWCATUCK — Ten Directions, a local band featuring band founder Ken Serio on drums, Michael Coppola on string guitar, Morris Trent on acoustic bass and vocalist Faye Green, will perform at The Phoenix Saturday night.
"Its going to be a special night of jazz and blues right here in Pawcatuck," said Serio, a 1982 Stonington High School graduate, who moved to New York in his 20s, returned a few years back and has been playing regularly ever since.
"We are doing something different with this gig," he said. "We are showing off our jazzy side ... and doing many numbers by Etta James one of Faye Greens big vocal influences."
Although Ten Directions has been known mostly for its "funky-R&B-style shows," Serio said, their current group is into "exploring The American Songbook, Jazz and Blues" these days.
The new direction highlights Greene's "superb vocals" and allows Serio to show a "more dynamic side" of his drumming, he added.
"When I named this band," he said, "the idea was that we would explore many styles and use many sidemen, with Faye and myself as the steady factor."
Saturday will mark the first time for the new Ten Directions to play at the recently-opened The Phoenix.
