Wheeler roundup: golfers drop a pair


STONINGTON — Wheeler High’s golf team was lost to two teams Thursday at Stonington Country Club— 5-2 to Fitch in an out of division matchup and 4-3 to Griswold in ECC-Small play.

Max Reck shot a 52 on the par-36 front nine in the No. 1 slot for Wheeler (3-6, 3-3 ECC-Small) and No. 2 Peyton Mulhern shot a 53. Jake Umphlett scored a 53 at No. 3, and No. 5 Coleton Lamb registered a 53.

Overall for the top four scorers, Fitch (4-5) took honors with 185, paced by medalist Corey Jones’ 44. Griswold (4-7, 3-4 ECC-Small) edged Wheeler by four strokes with a 206.

In the Griswold match, No. 2 Mulhern, No. 4 Tyler Primmett, who shot a 55, and No. 5 Lamb registered head-to-head wins against their Wolverine lineup counterparts. Griswold got the two deciding points to win 4-3 based on overall stroke total.

The Lions return to action May 14 to play Stonington at 3 p.m. at Stonington Country Club.

LEDYARD — Ledyard (8-2, 5-0 ECC-Small) maintained its league lead with Thursday’s win. Wheeler dropped to 2-9, 1-4 ECC-Small.

The co-op hosts Notre Dame-Fairfield on Saturday at 1 p.m.
