Westerly Middle turns back Ferri for wrestling victory


WESTERLY — Westerly Middle’s wrestling team won six matches by pin and downed Ferri Middle 46-36 on Friday.

The fastest pin of the day for Westerly went to Jacob Schafer, who pinned his opponent in the 140-pound match in just 26 seconds.

Schafer’s pin was one of four won by Westerly that came in less than a minute’s time. Brady Holdredge (104 pounds) pinned in 37 seconds, Ethan Kadar (112) finished his match in 42 seconds and Ryan O’Donnell (148) won in 55 seconds.

Dominic Bonanno won at 82 pounds with a pin at 2:15 and Shawn Moore recorded a pinfall in the 200-pound match at 1:06.

Wins by decision for Westerly came from Sam Luzzi (75), Dominic Johnson (126) and Kyle Roberts (170).

Friday’s contest was the last home match.

The Bulldogs finish the regular season at Barrington on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

The junior varsity middle school states are on Saturday, and the varsity states are on Feb. 8-9.

WAKEFIELD — The Bulldogs proved no match for an undefeated Curtis Cornter team in Friday’s Southern Division game.

Westerly was within six points after the first quarter, but fell behind by 17 points at halftime, 25-8, and never got any closer. Curtis Corner improved to 14-0.

Natalie Ritacco led Westerly (6-8) with five points and eight rebounds. Gabriella Celico scored four points and had four steals.

Westerly visit Chariho on Monday at 4 p.m.
